Federal Government Cheaper Home Batteries Program in Wagga Wagga

Save Thousands on Solar Batteries

Live in Wagga Wagga, Junee, Temora, Cootamundra or Tumut? The Federal Battery Rebate is now live, making solar batteries significantly more affordable for eligible households.

If you already have solar, or are planning to install it, adding a battery allows you to use your own solar power at night and rely less on the grid. That means lower bills, more control and better protection against rising energy costs.

The rebate can reduce the cost of a battery system by thousands of dollars. However, it will decrease from 1 May 2026, so installing sooner means securing the higher incentive.

What Is the Federal Government Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The Federal Battery Rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is now live, helping households across Wagga Wagga, Junee, Temora, Coolamon, Narrandera and the wider Riverina reduce the cost of installing solar battery storage.

The rebate is no longer a fixed amount. It is calculated per usable kilowatt hour and will decrease from 1 May 2026, dropping from roughly $311 per usable kWh to around $252 per usable kWh. It will then move to a bi annual reduction model with tiered, lower payments for larger systems. This means the amount you receive depends on your battery size and when you install.

Whether you are adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing a complete solar and battery package, the rebate can still reduce upfront costs by thousands. Installing sooner secures the higher incentive before it reduces.

For Riverina homeowners, this is a major opportunity to maximise solar savings, reduce grid reliance and take greater control of rising energy costs.

Am I Eligible for the Federal Government Cheaper Home Batteries Program in Wagga Wagga?

Eligibility for the Federal Battery Incentive will depend on a few important criteria related to your property, solar setup, and who installs your system. This includes:

  • You own or occupy the property
  • Your solar system is grid-connected and meets Australian safety standards
  • The battery must be installed by an approved provider
  • The battery should be technically capable of joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)—but you don’t have to enrol in one

If you’re located in Wagga Wagga, Junee, Temora, Coolamon, Narrandera, or anywhere across the Riverina, and you’ve got a compliant on-grid solar system (or you’re planning to install one), there’s a strong chance you’ll qualify.

Can Off-Grid Systems Access the Federal Battery Rebate?

Yes, in many cases off-grid solar systems in regional NSW may still be eligible for the Federal Battery Rebate, provided they meet the required technical and safety standards.

That is welcome news for rural properties, farms and remote households across the Wagga Wagga region, including Lockhart, Narrandera, Junee, Coolamon and Tumut, where grid access can be limited or unavailable.

The rebate is calculated per usable kilowatt hour and is now live, but it will decrease from 1 May 2026 and move to a bi annual reduction model. The final amount depends on your battery size and installation timing. For example, a 40 kWh off-grid solar system with battery storage could receive substantial support, potentially saving many thousands of dollars depending on the current rate.

We are closely tracking the rebate structure and will design your off-grid solar systems and complete solar and battery system to meet the eligibility criteria, helping you secure the highest available incentive before it reduces.

Can I Combine This with Other NSW Battery Incentives?

Yes. While the NSW Government has removed the BESS1 part of their scheme for installing a battery, they have increased the BESS2 component of the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). BESS2 is for signing your battery up to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and is organised through the energy retailer whose VPP you sign up to.

So, you can still get something from the state based program, but only if you connect your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), such as Amber.
